FULL MOON SERIES

The story goes that ganapati, who enjoyed eating sweets and eating in general, once over ate. and while sitting after his heavy meal on the nearly invisible vaahaan (mousie), he fell. the moon on seeing this, laughed its head off. pot bellied ganesha, who can barely balance himself while walking, falling down must definitely be a funny sight i am guessing. looking at the moon, who was considered very proud of its good looks, ganesha cursed the moon saying,”hey haughty one, u will become invisible to mankind for ever!”
a shocked moon, apologized profusely and requested ganesha to make the curse less severe. so ganapati, who along with a large tummy also had a big heart, agreed to tweak the curse and told the moon “fine then, u will wax and wane throughout such that u will be totally invisible and slowly appear fully every once in 15 days.” so, going by this, we have 12 poornima’s/ full moons in a year according to the hindu calendar. they approx. fall in each of the month from jan-dec.
poornima’s are considered very auspicious. and ofcourse the sky looks particularly splendid. sri sri says, the moon, the ocean and the mind are very closely linked. that’s how the ocean’s tides are closely related to the moon and that’s how the word ‘lunatic’ found its origin (from the word lunar). it is observed that mentally challenged people have pronounced symptoms on full moon and no moon days.
that apart, it is a good idea to go on a fruit fast on these days, so that our intestines can chill once a month and its easier to slip into meditation with a stomach thats not full of …err…thats not messy.
point being; full moon = full mind = abundance & bliss = celebration.
i am going to be writing a series of 12 posts hence, each of wonderful stories shared by my grandma from the bhaagvatam about the significance & rituals performed on the 12 poornima’s of the year. look out for this space.
